Chapter Twelve

Alex was in trouble. Big trouble.

Hawthorn had left the room shortly after she’d been cuffed and shoved into a chair. The two guards stood at the door, facing her. There was no chance she could get free and take them out, under the current circumstances. She might be able to take down one guard, but in these tight quarters, the other guard could get off a shot with no trouble. For the moment, she was hooked.

They searched her, taking her phone and other possessions. They turned the phone off and tossed it, along with the little Swiss Army knife she carried, onto a table along one wall of the room. When they realized she was wearing a wig and tear away clothing, they removed all of these and added them to the pile as well.

She sat now, hands cuffed behind her, wearing only the tight-fitting runner’s outfit. They’d even taken the silicone footwear.

Big trouble.

She wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but eventually the door opened and Congressman Hawthorn entered, along with Salvatore Russo and his two mob mooks.

It was Russo who approached her first, his expression amused but dark. “Well, hey, Ms. Grey. You looked better, down on the street. You know, I don’t appreciate being... waddya call it...” he snapped his fingers a few times, then smiled. “Misled.”

Alex said nothing. She was busy.

Watching. Thinking. Assessing.

Things looked bad, but there was always a chance, if she kept her cool. PaPa Kayne had drilled that into her head, and she needed it now more than ever.

Hawthorn joined Russo, standing before Alex, looking down on her with his hands clasped behind his back. “This is the woman who killed my son,” Hawthorn said. He turned to Russo, “My friend, I have a favor to ask.”

Russo smirked and held up a hand. “Say no more,” he replied. Then he chuckled, “It’s always best not to ask certain favors out loud!” He glanced knowingly to his two boys, who chuckled with him.

Hawthorn nodded. “This has caused me quite a bit of personal pain, but it has also complicated things for me professionally. So I trust you can take care of things in a discreet way?”

Russo shrugged. “Of course.”

Hawthorn again nodded, then turned to Alex. “Ms. Kayne. I’ve learned a lot about you. I suspect I know what brought you here. My son’s… dilemma with Detective Hebert. Is that it?”

Alex peered at him. “You framed Hebert for extortion,” she said. “Jason was never my target.”

Hawthorn’s expression hardened. “So you intended to murder me, is that it?”

“Jason attacked me. Tried to rape me, and tried to kill me,” she said. “I defended myself.” She paused, never breaking eye contact with the Congressman. “You know how that goes.”

“I do,” Hawthorn nodded. “We often do all sorts of things, to defend ourselves and what’s ours. Or to avenge those we’ve lost. You took my son from me. He could be a lot of trouble but he was my son. Mine. Now… this tragedy can only help me in the polls.
